Lieutenant Abrem Ayana is the Unit Commander of the Brookhaven Police Department Criminal Investigations Division. He joined the BPD as a patrol officer in May 2015. Before joining the Brookhaven Police Department, he was a member of the Clayton County Police Department. His previous assignments include Uniform Patrol and Narcotics/ Criminal Interdiction. In October 2020, the police department gained council approval to implement a Drone First Responder (DFR) Program. Lieutenant Ayana and the BPD UAS team successfully launched DFR operations in April 2021. In his role as UAS program manager, he is responsible for researching, developing, and managing UAS operations for the department. He holds an FAA Remote Pilot Certificate for operation of small-unmanned aircraft systems and is a POST-certified Instructor and Field Training Officer. He has been recognized by his peers as BPD Supervisor of the Year in 2019 and received the Georgia Association of Chief's of Police Supervisor of the Year Recognition for the metro Atlanta region in 2022.
