Brian O'Hara is currently the Deputy Mayor for Strategic Initiatives for Police Services and Public Safety for the City of Newark, New Jersey. O’Hara previsously served as Newark’s Public Safety Director, leading 2,000 sworn and civilian employees.
O'Hara began his career as a police officer in Newark's West Distict, and was later Executive Officer of the North District, and Commander of the Metro Division. He led police reform under a federal consent decree, rising to the rank of deputy chief.
Deputy Mayor O’Hara earned his undergraduate and graduate degrees from Rutgers-Newark. He completed the program for Senior Executives in State and Local Government at the Harvard Kennedy School, the 240th Session of the FBI National Academy, the 54th Session of the PERF Senior Management Institute for Police, and the 45th session of the FBI National Executive Institute.
Outside of the policing, Deputy Mayor O’Hara is an adjunct professor of criminal justice at Kean University and is a published author. He is married to Lieutenant Wafiyyah O'Hara of the Newark Police Division and is the proud father of two boys.
