Dr. Formica is a Senior Research Scientist at Social Science Research and Evaluation, Inc. He has 23 years of applied research and evaluation experience on substance abuse prevention. He has been evaluating opioid overdose prevention projects since 2006 as part of SAMHSA’s strategic prevention framework state incentive grant and the substance abuse prevention and treatment block grant. In 2015, Dr. Formica and colleagues conducted a survey of all police departments in Massachusetts to identify municipalities implementing post-overdose outreach programs. Results of this study are published in the April 2018 issue of the International Journal of Drug Policy. Dr. Formica is currently evaluating post-overdose outreach programs in the 11 regions of the state in collaboration with the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and is collaborating with colleagues at Boston Medical Center on a Centers for Disease Control R01 grant to further study these models.
