Words are powerful, but to fully harness the strength of your communications, sometimes you have to meet people where they stand. This presentation will introduce attendees to the Ossining, New York Police Department’s social media initiative, which features independently managed platforms for English-language and Spanish-language communications. The “Policia de Ossining” project was originally conceived as a mechanism to build trust in law enforcement in a largely immigrant community but has evolved to become a digital meeting place for our Spanish-speaking neighbors. We will discuss the benefits of dedicated second-language outlets and provide solutions to the challenges of managing communications in multiple languages, including dealing with critics.
