Fear triggers the primitive limbic system to protect the individual with the fight or flight response. The higher level executive function of the brain is hijacked in the initial response to an ambush. Training to regain control of the executive brain as quickly as possible is necessary to regain self control of the individual. This has implications for avoiding excessive use of force, as well as medical decision-making.
