Chair IACP Physician Section IACP , Colorado POST Certified Peace Officer, United States
In response to several adverse outcomes during the management of individuals demonstrating combative behavior, the State of Colorado enacted legislation that banned certain terms used in the handoff by police to paramedic personnel. The use of certain terms would be prima facie evidence of excessive use of force. The “offending” officer would be subject to loss of POST certification. Similar legislation has been introduced into the U.S. Congress.
Communication during resolution of critical incidents is imperative by all members of the prehospital team of law enforcement, fire and rescue and EMS. Case analysis and best practices will be explored primarily with video review of selected cases.
