What Can We Do to Help? We’re Not Doctors or Mental Health Clinicians

It is often said that family support is critical to the health, well-being, and career success of law enforcement officers. Spouses, partners, parents, children, and companions of law enforcement all serve as an essential support system for their loved one. Family members take this responsibility seriously, and want to be supportive. Yet, all too often, when issues of mental health and thoughts of suicide arise, family members are left feeling unprepared and asking the question, “What can we do to help? We’re not doctors or mental health clinicians.” This presentation looks at practical steps and training that family members can receive to be better prepared to help. Everyone can learn the skills necessary to intervene and help someone experiencing thoughts of suicide to stay safe.
