This presentation provides participants with an overview of the massive worldwide illegal logging and timber trafficking crisis. These crimes most often involve complex international financial and logistical components. Topics include current trends associated with industrial timber smuggling, corruption, third-party international finance, international supply chains, “timber laundering,” and the paradox of timber seizures.
The presentation will highlight basic investigative steps specific to these crimes, in addition to recent scientific forensic tools available to investigators. The presentation will allow participants to consider the significant forces and finances involved in the international timber industry and examine how criminals exploit the international supply chain.
