Special Agent In Charge, Dallas Division Drug Enforcement Administration Dallas, Texas, United States
This presentation focuses on the emergence of counterfeit pills in our communities, and how state and local (S&L) agencies should address this issue. Currently, many S&L agencies flag a 911 fatal drug overdose call as an “accidental death”, and many of the traditional crime scene preservation protocols are not applied. The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Dallas Division has seen success in multiple investigations where S&L agencies are taught to treat these calls for service not as an accidental death but rather a homicide. This ensures responding officers take measures to secure the scene and evidence, and identify potential witnesses. The presentation will discuss the DEA’s One Pill Can Kill campaign and how S&L agencies could partner with DEA to consolidate efforts to raise awareness about counterfeit prescription drugs.
