Police agencies can no longer ignore the pressing need for digital forensics. The sheer volume of digital evidence that can be found at every crime scene necessitates the need for digital forensic units within every agency, regardless of size. Besides the obvious sources of digital evidence found at nearly every crime scene like cell phones and tablets, there are also DVR’s, vehicle infotainment systems, gaming devices, and IoT devices (e.g., Alexa smart home systems, Apple TVs, Ring Doorbells) to consider. This panel will discuss the need for these digital units, how to get funding or combine efforts with other local agencies, where to find training, and how to present all this new data to solve crimes and protect the innocent.
