The opioid crisis has had a significant impact on communities across the United States. Many departments have employed active outreach deflection strategies intentionally trying to reach the individuals most at-risk for overdose in their community with behavioral health partners.
This workshop will focus on active outreach first responder techniques that lead with promoting harm reduction strategies seen in the public health sector. These include provision of naloxone to at-risk individuals, providing multiple opportunities to engage with services, using plainclothes officers, outreach to family members of victims of overdose, establishing guidelines and protocols dictating if and how warrant checking will occur, and building rapport through motivational interviewing and empathic communication.
