The increases in violent crime have altered the conversation in many jurisdictions around reimagining public safety, but one popular initiative continues to be proposed and implemented across the United States and around the world: alternative response programs. These specialized teams— like CAHOOTS and STAR— can address complex, chronic social issues, but many policymakers consider alternative response programs as part of their plan to address crime spikes. The presenters will discuss relevant data highlighting the need for alternative response programs and address the realities of what issues a successfully implemented program can and cannot address. Evidence-based solutions for substance misuse, homelessness, and property and violent crime will be discussed.
