Ghost guns have become a significant concern to law enforcement and are seriously impacting public safety across the United States. Ghost guns are most commonly produced from components purchased from online businesses and at gun shows. These kits include nearly finished frames or receivers that require little technical skill and just basic hand tools to turn into a functioning firearm. Because of their ease of production, the lack of a background checks required to obtain their building blocks, and poor traceability, ghost guns have started to represent a growing proportion of recovered crime guns. This panel will discuss the findings and recommendations of the Police Foundation’s recently released report, “The Proliferation of Ghost Guns: Regulation Gaps and Challenges for Law Enforcement.”
