Drug overdose deaths in the United States continue to rise. To address this crisis requires strong, collaborative multi-sector partnerships within local communities. The CDC Foundation developed the Public Health and Safety Team (PHAST) framework to help jurisdictions reduce overdose deaths by increasing collaboration and coordination among all sectors. PHAST is modeled after New York City’s RxStat initiative and engages multi-sector partners through a data-driven process known as “SOS” shared understanding, optimized capacity, and shared accountability— which are goals of PHAST’s data sharing and collaboration activities. A midsized urban and large urban community will share their experience with PHAST and several public safety and health partnerships that have come out of this process.
