Historically, police departments have used data for crime fighting and deploying resources. In the last 20 years, many departments have been confronted with their data that appeared to have inequity or disproportionality based upon their enforcement. Often, when this comes to light, it’s after an issue had an irreparable impact in the community or an incident has highlighted that data should be further explored to clarify the underlying why. Departments compelled to aggregate and explore their data have had positive results by creating a baseline to compare and a goal for improving in clearly identified areas. Our panel of chiefs and equity experts will highlight how departments can get ahead of the curve and use data as a form of transparency, accountability, and community engagement.
