Hate and violent rhetoric stemming from political, religious, social, and cultural beliefs are not new phenomena, nor is the violence that they may fuel. The difficulty in combatting violent extremism lies in the many forms it takes, as well as in the rapid evolution of social media as a method of radicalization and recruitment. How does one distinguish the indicators of violent extremism from those of legally protected speech and action while maintaining community and responder safety? This seminar introduces participants to the different types of domestic and homegrown violent extremism, indicators of violent extremist behavior, characteristics of recruitment and radicalization, and the legal safeguards that protect civil rights, civil liberties, and privacy.
