Mistaken identifications by eyewitnesses account for about 70 percent of wrongful convictions confirmed by DNA. Some errors are driven by viewing conditions that are beyond the control of police, but others can be minimized by use of reliable best practices and training. This session will help officers identify identification pitfalls before they occur and implement procedural measures to decrease the likelihood of error. Protocols and training presented are all the result of extensive science and research, as identified and recommended by the Third Circuit Task Force on Eyewitness Identification.
