On October 1, 2017, a gunman opened fire upon 22,000 attendees of the Route 91 Harvest Festival in Las Vegas, Nevada, killing 60 and injuring thousands of others mentally and physically. Following this tragic event, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) took an in-depth look at their response, investigation, and recovery efforts. In this workshop, IACP Mass Violence Advisory Initiative consultant and LVMPD Detective Kenneth Mead will present an overview of lessons learned from this incident — including effective response strategies, unanticipated challenges, and long-term impacts. Mass violence incidents can present unique challenges to law enforcement; learning from the experiences of others can better prepare communities to heal in the wake of tragedy.
