Chief of Police Metropolitan Police Department, Washington, DC Washington, District of Columbia, United States
On January 6, 2021, a violent mob stormed the grounds of the U.S. Capitol with the intentions of interrupting the democratic process. The mob’s sustained assault at the Capitol precipitated an equally unprecedented response, with an urgent request for the Metropolitan Police Department of the District of Columbia (MPD) to come defend the Capitol. Without hesitation, MPD officers responded to the grounds to restore order and allow the legislative body to continue counting electoral votes. The perseverance of the MPD that evening contributed to restoring order and allowing democracy to prevail. Chief of Police Robert J. Contee III will highlight incident complexities, outline his leadership and operational strategies, provide critical messaging framework, and deliver lessons learned.
