NFPA 472 (2018) provided the competencies for these three very important positions that work closely together during a hazardous materials incident. NFPA 1072 (2018) did not include Job Performance Requirements, but the new NFPA 470 (2022) includes the JPRs for all three of these assigned positions. This three-part workshop series will provide information to enhance your skills when assigned to these one of these positions and help you become proficient at developing goals/objectives, strategies & tactics and ensuring a safe haz mat scene.
The Haz Mat Officer works within the incident command system to direct and coordinate all team operations as assigned by the Incident Commander. As the group supervisor of the haz mat team the Haz Mat Officer interprets hazard and risk assessment information collected by the team to makes specific recommendations and suggestions to the IC on potential strategies and tactics.
Learning Objectives:
Give participants information on the legal aspect of the Safety Officer with the competencies and JPRs required in NFPA 470..
Define the Safety Officer position and identify which tasks the Safety Officer should have involvement and which ones are not in their lane.
Have participants make decisions on scenarios presented so participants leave presentation with confidence to act as a Safety Officer.
