NFPA 472 (2018) provided the competencies for these three very important positions that work closely together during a hazardous materials incident. NFPA 1072 (2018) did not include Job Performance Requirements, but the new NFPA 470 (2022) includes the JPRs for all three of these assigned positions. This three-part workshop series will provide information to enhance your skills when assigned to these one of these positions and help you become proficient at developing goals/objectives, strategies & tactics and ensuring a safe haz mat scene.
The Haz Mat Team Safety Officer works in conjunction with the Incident Safety Officer to assist the Haz Mat Officer develop the site safety plan in the proposed Incident Action Plan. The HMSO evaluates potential safety gaps while operating within a risk-based response process to ensure that safe work practices are consistent with the Emergency Response Plan and Incident Action Plan.
Learning Objectives:
Give participants information on the legal aspect of the Safety Officer with the competencies and JPRs required in NFPA 470..
Define the Safety Officer position and identify which tasks the Safety Officer should have involvement and which ones are not in their lane.
Have participants make decisions on scenarios presented so participants leave presentation with confidence to act as a Safety Officer.
