The Covid-19 Pandemic catalyzed PHMSA’s outreach and engagement team to quickly transition to live virtual interactions. In mid-2020, we quickly converted some of our in-person presentations for a live webinar format; in 2021, we also developed new resources on regulatory guidance for the public. This virtual pivot was also accompanied by a shift in product development and design—centering our approach and resources with the public in mind. Our new slate of basic live webinars complemented and referenced our existing resources. We also developed a new resource catering to those who are completely new to the hazmat regulatory world, increasing the accessibility of the regulations. Currently, we are developing more focused content and resources on specialty topics as well as supplementing our reach by posting a recorded webinar online. These live and recorded webinars provide a temporary reprieve from doing in-person presentations, evidenced in comparable attendance numbers. While these virtual webinars provide a connection with the public, the quality of engagement remains debatable.
