This workshop includes classroom and hands-on training to prepare HazMat technicians to conduct risk-based response to battery emergencies for multiple types of batteries including Lithium Metal and Lithium-Ion (Li-Ion). The course covers batteries found in transportation including passenger vehicles, ground transport, air and sea shipping, as well as residential, commercial, and industrial settings. Students will gain knowledge and skills needed for battery incident assessment, developing an action plan, air monitoring, and overpacking damaged lithium battery cells.
Learning Objectives:
Given a simulated battery emergency, the participant will be able to develop a verbal incident action plan (IAP) to safely mitigate the incident.
Given a type of battery, the participant will be able to explain the expected meter readings during normal battery operation and battery abuse/failure.
Given simulated lithium-ion battery incident, the participant will be able to explain the proper steps to safely overpack the battery using a DOT approved DDR container.
