(MM05) mindful MATERIALS Presents: The Virtuous Cycle: Reducing Embodied Carbon & Enabling a Circular Economy
Thursday, November 3, 2022
1:30 PM – 2:45 PM
Location: Networking Lounge - Expo Floor
We all understand the pitfalls of today’s linear economy - but in order to make the dream of a circular economy our reality, we must drive demand - not just supply - of reclaimed building products and materials, viewing these items as commodities, not just waste or salvaged materials. Designing with reclaimed materials is a great way to reduce embodied carbon and divert construction and demolition waste from landfill, but how do designers find and source locally available materials? What best practices can be employed to overcome common barriers during construction and ensure that products that can be taken back and remanufactured actually are? Hear from building industry professionals in the manufacturing, architecture, and technology sectors who are taking strides to reduce embodied carbon while growing the circular economy, and connect with peers who share similar interests to start to grow your own network.
Learning Objectives:
Describe the challenges in the current linear economy within the built environment
Identify your role within the building material supply chain and the opportunities you have from your position to contribute to a circular economy.
Incorporate tools that are being developed today to simplify adoption of circular design practices
Achieve the Circular Economy innovation credit for LEED projects using practices learned in this session
