The embodied carbon impacts of the built environment continue to be a major focus for architects, designers, corporations, and building owners. This learning lab will provide an overview of embodied carbon, how to achieve optimization through sustainable design integration, and how this information can help manufacturers reduce the environmental impacts of their products and identify opportunities to reduce the potential risk and exposure of the substances in their product’s value chain. The learning lab will also provide an overview of product transparency documents such as Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) and Health Product Declarations (HPDs), an overview of the varying tools available to manufacturers to better understand the embodied carbon impacts of products, and sustainable product innovation techniques companies can employ to reduce the environmental and potentially human health impacts of their products.
Learning Objectives:
Provide an overview of embodied carbon and how manufacturers are using this information for product optimization.
Provide an overview of LEED BD+C v4 and 4.1 credits which address product transparency including: (1) Building Product Disclosure and Optimization: Environmental Product Declarations (EPD), Credit Option One and Credit Option Two, (2) Circular Products Pilot Credit, and (3) Building Product Disclosure and Optimization: Material Ingredients Credit.
Discuss available tools organizations can use to assist in selecting optimized products, including recommended specification language.
Provide an overview of how to read and understand optimization information which assists with total building optimization.
