Passive building is a set of design principles for attaining a rigorous level of energy efficiency while also creating comfortable indoor living spaces. These principles can be applied to all buildings, including single-family homes, multifamily apartment buildings, schools, skyscrapers, and more. Opening solutions have a significant impact on a passive building and need to be evaluated. This session will focus on an overview of the passive house standard and how door openings can contribute to achieving passive building requirements.

Learning Objectives:

Understand passive building concepts, standards, and how it applies to all building types.
Review the concepts of optimizing the building envelope and the importance of maximizing efficiency for total opening solutions.
Describe how to maximize energy efficiency for all energy consuming devices including access controls and opening solutions equipment.
Discuss how passive building techniques can be integrated into other green building standards like LEED to optimize energy efficiency and indoor environmental quality.
