The landscape of ESG reporting has evolved dramatically over the last decade, as both regulators and ESG rating organizations strive to standardize ESG data to drive investment confidence into the sector. As a result, real estate organizations find themselves subject to a barrage of voluntary and involuntary reporting requirements. Despite consolidation efforts by the leading reporting frameworks, the ESG reporting landscape remains complex and intimidating for companies with limited resources amidst a growing demand for transparency. Real estate owners and operators must deliberately choose which reporting frameworks to align with to position themselves in the market and meet the needs of their stakeholders, while conserving bandwidth to drive continuous improvement. Public organizations are under even more pressure with the SEC’s Proposed Climate Disclosure Rule, closing the gap between non-financial and financial reporting. In this session, the presenter will share updates on the landscape of ESG reporting, including an overview of the top reporting frameworks, associated challenges and ‘reporting overload’, the SEC’s Proposed Climate Disclosure Rule, and frameworks for developing an ESG reporting strategy.
Learning Objectives:
Summarize the current state of ESG reporting, including the challenges of meeting rising demands for transparency.
Describe the SEC’s Proposed Climate Disclosure Rule and the implications for public organizations.
Explain the importance of developing an ESG strategy and deliberately prioritizing which disclosure frameworks to align with.
