‘Invisible architecture’ – air, heat, light and sound – are major influences for SFMOMA’s design. In 2016, the SFMOMA completed the LEED Gold expansion of the existing museum designed by Mario Botta with a dramatic yet complementary new wing, designed by Snohetta and EHDD. Art museums are required to use a strict conditioning criteria to preserve valuable art. These requirements directly influence a museum’s layout, the design of its mechanical systems, and its lighting strategy. SFMOMA refined its approaches to balance art preservation, the visitor experience and reduce energy use. The building uses a seasonal variation of temperature and humidity setpoints, has a high-performance envelope, and a sophisticated lighting control scheme with a set lighting energy budget. The tour will explore the new and renovated indoor and outdoor galleries tailored to the museum’s celebrated collection.
Learning Objectives:
Identify sustainable design strategies that support energy-efficient museum design while supporting art preservation requirements.
Implement seasonal setpoints in a museum that respond to local climate and environment.
Apply monitoring methods for air quality, temperature and humidity.
Develop a lighting energy budget and controls that distribute power draw across the building.
