Chou Hall is the first academic building in the country awarded LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Platinum and WELL certifications, the latter a designation reflecting a focus on user health and well-being. In addition, Chou Hall also attained a platinum level TRUE Zero Waste(opens in a new tab) certification, the first academic building in the nation and the first Zero Waste building on the UC Berkeley campus. Chou Hall diverts over 90 percent of its waste from landfills.
Learning Objectives:
Explore lessons learned from project team members on the key project priorities, stakeholder engagement and alignments with the benchmarking of LEED, WELL and TRUE
Identify how the building’s passive and active design strategies reduce energy consumption and optimize occupant visual and thermal comfort
Understand how healthy materials and water saving strategies were integrated seamlessly to meet LEED and WELL credit requirements.
Understand the integrated systems strategy that tie green building, health and zero waste in designing a beacon of sustainability for a large campus
