Merck’s new research facility is a key part of the growing biotech community in South San Francisco and achieved an impressive list of certifications including LEED Gold, WELL Silver, and Two-Star Fitwel certification. The project is a 9-story lab, office and amenities building that was one of the first research labs to be certified under the WELL building standard. Occupying a development by ARE, the 300,000 SF fit out was designed by Jacobs and built by DPR Construction. After occupancy, Merck implemented operational strategies that reduce ongoing waste by 80%, and successfully achieved LEED Zero Energy and LEED Zero Carbon, as well as research focused innovations like green chemistry and lab waste reduction. Join us as we learn about the design, construction and occupancy of this process-intensive research lab facility.
Learning Objectives:
Visitors will learn about key design and construction strategies of this state-of-the art research facility and how it helped the project achieve LEED and WELL certification.
Visitors will learn about specific strategies Merck innovated in operations – from waste reduction, to energy reduction, as well as green chemistry and waste programs specific to the research lab environment.
Visitors will learn about how the project undertook LEED Zero certification and Fitwel certification post occupancy and lessons learned. They will also learn how the LEED Zero and Fitwel certifications encourage sustainability performance after occupancy.
Visitors will learn about specific challenges to research facilities and the application of LEED, WELL and Fitwel strategies to this process intensive project type. Looking at the innovations since the building was completed, the group will discuss specific challenges and opportunities of designing and operating research lab facilities.
