Edwin M. Lee Apartments is San Francisco’s first new construction shared residential community for formerly homeless veterans and low-income families. The project contains 119 units with ground-floor supportive services, including a community kitchen that serves meals to residents and community members. The project’s climate-responsive massing and organization allows families and veterans to form a new community centered on the shared gardens and common areas, which restore native and adapted ecologies on a post-industrial site. A large PV array that cascades over the building provides 90% of the common area’s electrical load. The integrated design creates a healthy, energy efficient, and resilient complex that provides layers of value to the residents and the greater community.
