The Silver Oak Alexander Valley facility is the first commercial winery to achieve LEED Platinum BD+C & Living status from the International Living Future Institute. Features include an expansive solar array, battery with microgrid capabilities, wastewater recycling and reuse, salvaged materials and many more. The vineyards are certified sustainable under the California Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance. Upon arrival, guests are welcomed into our modern barn-inspired tasting room adjacent to the iconic Silver Oak water tower. Guests will enjoy both our Alexander Valley and Napa Valley Cabernets while being guided on a tour that includes a walk through the vineyard to our LEED Platinum & Living certified state-of-the-art production facility.
Learning Objectives:
Understand the basic elements of a membrane bioreactor as a means to treat and reuse winery process water and the benefits and drawbacks of this system.
Explore material selection in the context of LEED Platinum and the Living Building certification’s red list.
Discuss how the project achieved net positive energy using a combination of solar panels for both electricity and hot water, as well as CO2 heat pumps.
Review the function of the battery and our experience operating a microgrid.
