GENESIS Marina is a premier life science development, now in construction, offering 560,000 SF of modular Class A laboratory and office space, designed by SOM and built by Webcor. Its waterfront location in Brisbane, California is remarkable, surrounded by striking views of the Bay, direct access to the San Francisco Bay Trail system, and the mountains of South San Francisco. It also sits atop a former landfill – an unlikely site to champion a green, prosperous, and sustainable future. Inspired by the site’s history, the team set ambitious waste goals that go beyond its LEED v4 Gold target to combat the perils of resource wastage, a linear economy, and climate change. GENESIS Marina is set to become the world’s first commercial building project to achieve TRUE (Zero Waste) for Construction certification. Strategies to reduce, reuse, redesign, re-earth, and recycle have diverted over 90 percent of all waste from the construction process.
Learning Objectives:
Application of TRUE Zero Waste for Construction program.
Understanding how construction waste can be managed better on jobsites – source separation, reuse, composting, infrastructure.
Understand materials management and upstream waste reduction strategies.
Understanding how TRUE applies outside of C&D waste: trailer operations, plastic water bottle reduction, signage, training, and behavior change.
