(G05) The AIA-CLF Embodied Carbon Toolkit for Architects

Embodied carbon is a significant contributor to global climate change and industrial emissions play a key role. Due to the limited amount of time remaining before the tipping point of the climate crisis, and the "frontloading" pattern of embodied carbon emissions, reducing embodied carbon is urgent. We need to reduce embodied carbon now, before new buildings are built, to reach climate targets that allow us to avoid catastrophic climate change.
This panel session will provide a critical overview on the importance and urgency of embodied carbon, its methods for measurement, the strategies and tools available for making reductions, and real-world examples of how the city of San Francisco is implementing it into their larger decarbonization plans.
The presentation will be built around the AIA-CLF Embodied Carbon Toolkit for Architects – a collaborative effort between the American Institute of Architect and the Carbon Leadership Forum. It is a free resource and guide that serves to provide architects an overview and the necessary steps to be taken to reduce embodied carbon in their projects.
