(A09) How Toyota’s Trigeneration Renewable Energy Project Is Helping the Port of Long Beach Meet Sustainability Goals

Learn how Toyota's new Logistics Services Vehicle Processing and Distribution Center (TLS) used a ground-breaking Trigeneration Fuel Cell to support corporate Carbon Neutrality goals as well as the Clean Air Action Plan of the Port of Long Beach (POLB) in Southern California, supporting the Port to meet their emission goals. This LEED v3 BD+C project with v4.0/v4.1 substitutions allowed Toyota to address seemingly disparate needs of using renewable power to meet needs of consolidating operations in a single new building, providing hydrogen fuel for imported Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles (such as the Mirai), as well as providing fueling for the hydrogen fuel cell Heavy Duty Truck program (Portal) with an integrated system using Trigeneration fuel cell technology to simultaneously and renewably generate power, hydrogen fuel, and water to rinse off vehicles at the on-site car wash; reducing the project's impact on the municipal domestic water supply and enabling POLB to achieve air quality compliance. TLS uses renewable electricity directly from an onsite fuel cell that utilizes biomethane from the gas utility grid as its renewable fuel. The fuel cell system converts the renewable gas into renewable electricity and renewable hydrogen. A feed-in tariff program allows eligible plants to sell power to one of the state's investor-owned utilities at fixed prices, providing the use of biogas in-state to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve overall air quality. TLS's continuous renewable electricity output is 80%-85% higher than the peak energy demands for the facility. Through the California Public Utilities Commission BioMAT tariff, excess renewable electricity can be sold to Southern California Edison, the regulated utility serving the POLB.
