Thomas Detre Professor of Medicine; Division Chief, Geriatrics
University of Pittsburgh/UPMC
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United States
Dr. Resnick serves as Thomas Detre Professor and Chief of Geriatrics at the University of Pittsburgh, and he was Founding Director of the university’s Aging Institute. Previously, he established Harvard’s Division of Gerontology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and created America’s first Continence Center.
Dr. Resnick has devoted his career to caring for older adults, studying the causes of their illnesses, and teaching others to do the same. Funded by NIH for >30 years, he helped to pioneer the field of geriatric incontinence. His research has enhanced not only our understanding of the prevalence, risk factors, and impact of incontinence but also the physiology of the lower urinary tract, the ways it changes with age, and the pathophysiology of geriatric incontinence. In addition to generating innovative new methods in geriatric research, his studies often challenged the prevailing paradigms. They also led to novel therapeutic approaches and to creation of the Minimum Data Set (MDS) which is now required in every US nursing home. In addition, he worked with the US Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) and the WHO to adapt the guidelines for other settings and countries. After discovering that a similar tack was effective for other geriatric conditions, such as osteoporosis, falls, and delirium, he and his colleagues began to re-engineer the entire clinical approach to the older patient, both to improve it and to embed the improvement into routine care. As a result, CMS/Medicare selected him as an Innovation Advisor.
Dr. Resnick’s work has been honored by awards from the American Urological Association, American Geriatrics Society, Society for General Internal Medicine, and NIH. Many of his former mentees are now national leaders. He has received several teaching awards, and he has been included in America’s Top Doctors and Best Doctors in America since their first editions.
