Thomas M. Hess is a Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Psychology at North Carolina State University and recipient of the APA Baltes Distinguished Research Achievement Award and GSA Behavioral and Social Sciences Section Distinguished Career Contribution to Gerontology Award . He is past editor of Journal of Gerontology: Psychology Sciences, and is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association, Association for Psychological Science, Gerontological Society of America, and Psychonomic Society. He has published extensively on cognitive and social cognitive functioning in adulthood. Of particular significance in his research is an innovative focus on motivation, affect, aging stereotypes, and social experience as moderators of age differences in cognitive performance and adaptive functioning.
