I am an interdisciplinary gerontologist with a program of research centered around social and behavioral determinants of population health outcomes in middle and later adulthood. Within this broad area of research, I focus on the health consequences of social and productive engagements, with a special emphasis on a set of prosocial helping behaviors that middle-aged and older adults often engage in, such as family caregiving, volunteering, and informal helping. In examining the health consequences of helping behaviors, my research projects employ large, nationally representative data sources, such as the biennial Health and Retirement Study (HRS) and the Midlife in the United States (MIDUS), and also take a theory-driven approach to understand and uncover behavioral and biological pathways linking different forms of helping behaviors and physical, mental, and cognitive health outcomes.
