Doctoral Candidate
University of Maryland, Baltimore
Columbia, Maryland, United States
I am a doctoral cadidate in the Gerontology program at the Universities of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) and Baltimore County (UMBC). The focus of my dissertation is to assess gender and racial disparities in unmet dementia-related care needs among non-spousal informal care partners of community-dwelling persons with dementia. As a graduate research assistant at the Erickson School for Aging Studies at UMBC I am working with Dr. Bradley on a study to examine the experiences and challenges among students in higher education who are informal (unpaid) caregivers to adults such as family members. I have spent over twenty-five years in the field of aging as both an employee and researcher. I have worked or conducted qualitative research in a variety of settings from adult day services, to nursing homes, assisted living, and independent living associated with a continuing care retirement community. In addition, as a research assistant on a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation grant, I held focus groups with older adults living in their homes in aging neighborhoods of Baltimore. I spent six years as a qualitative researcher and ethnographer at the Center for Aging Studies at UMBC. Sudies focused on the exploration of novel topics, primarily for persons with dementia: Alzheimer's disease and culture change in assisted living; strategies for managing persons with dementia in assisted living; managing intimacy among residents with dementia; programs for participants of adult day services with dementia; and the health and long-term care of lesbian and gay older adults.
