David L. Roth, PhD, received a Bachelor of Science degree in 1980 from the University of North Dakota with majors in Mathematics and Psychology. He then earned an MA degree and a PhD in clinical psychology from the University of Kansas. After completing a 1-year internship in clinical neuropsychology at the University of Florida, he joined the faculty at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where served for over 24 years before taking his current leadership position at Johns Hopkins University. Dr. Roth is currently a Professor of Geriatric Medicine and Gerontology in the School of Medicine at Johns Hopkins and the Director of the Johns Hopkins interdisciplinary Center on Aging and Health. He has joint appointments as a Professor in the Departments of Epidemiology and Biostatistics of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Dr. Roth has over 35 years of experience as a researcher and scholar with specific expertise in successful aging, family caregiving, and applied statistical analysis. He has over 270 peer-reviewed publications that report original, data-based research findings. He has published these papers in over 120 different scientific journals, which demonstrates the breadth of his research interests and his collaborations. He has consistently been supported at very high levels by grants from the National Institutes of Health, and particularly from the National Institute on Aging. Some of his most impactful work has involved studying possible health benefits from family caregiving, including enhanced longevity or reduced mortality risk for the caregivers. He also has considerable expertise in designing and implementing statistical methods that test mediation hypotheses of the mechanisms responsible for intervention effects and for risk factor influences.
