Rich Holden is professor, Dean’s Eminent Scholar, and chair of the Department of Health & Wellness Design at the School of Public Health, Chief Healthcare Engineer in the IU Center for Health Innovation and Implementation Science, and a Regenstrief Institute investigator and 2020 Venture Fellow. He applies his training in industrial engineering and psychology towards “better health, by design.” In the systems engineering community, Dr. Holden is internationally recognized as the leader in the field of patient ergonomics, “the science (and design) of patient work.” He was named the 2021 Jack A. Kraft Innovator for creating the patient ergonomics subdiscipline, the subject of his 2021 two-volume edited handbook titled The Patient Factor. Research interests include aging and chronic disease, health information technology, health behavior interventions, social determinants of health, and methods development. His work has been published in over 150 books and articles and supported by over $75M (USD) in grants and contracts from NIH, AHRQ, PCORI, NIST, CMS, and other federal agencies. Professional leadership roles include Editor of the journal Ergonomics and board membership for professional societies, nonprofits, and tech companies.
