Lisa Skemp, PhD, RN, FGSA, FAAN is a Professor in the Marcella Niehoff School of Nursing, Loyola University Chicago. Her BSN is from Viterbo University, La Crosse, Wisconsin. She received her MA in Community Health and Nursing Education, and her PhD in Gerontological Nursing from the University of Iowa. Dr. Skemp completed a John A. Hartford Claire M. Fagin Postdoctoral Fellowship with a focus on culturally informed community capacity building for healthy aging. Prior to joining Loyola University Chicago, she was a tenured faculty at the University of Iowa and the Director of the Iowa Hartford Center of Geriatric Nursing Excellence Global Health Initiatives. From 2011 to 2014 she held the Sister Agnes Marie Fitzsimons Endowed Chair of Gerontological Nursing at Our Lady of the Lake College and was the recipient of the 2015 Florence Nightingale Award for Outstanding Nurse Research. Dr. Skemp is a Fellow in the Gerontological Society of America, the American Academy of Nursing, the Institute of Medicine Chicago, and the Public Voices Greenhouse OpEd Project.
Dr. Skemp has curriculum expertise in community health, global health, gerontology, and qualitative research. With colleagues she has developed a 22-year interdisciplinary global health program for students in the Caribbean, South India, rural Midwest, Deep South, and urban Chicago. This interdisciplinary program integrates research, education, and practice to focus on promoting health and quality of life for community-dwelling older adults. The research provides a foundation for understanding elders’ naturally occurring personal care networks which inform the development and testing of culturally informed community interventions focused on Limb Loss Prevention; Family Involvement in Care of Persons with Dementia; and Intergenerational Relationships to address Stigma, Ageism, and Loneliness. Information technology is used to facilitate intergenerational and community communication, and culturally informed programming.
