Dr. Kalisha Bonds Johnson is an Assistant Professor at Emory University’s Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing in Atlanta, Georgia and a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner at Emory University’s Integrated Memory Care, a primary care clinic tailored to the care of persons living with dementia. She graduated from The University of Tennessee at Martin with her Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 2007. In 2012, she graduated with her Master of Science in Nursing from Vanderbilt University, specializing as a Family Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. In 2019, Dr. Bonds Johnson graduated with a PhD from Oregon Health & Science University. Most recently, she completed her postdoctoral training (or training after completing a PhD) at Emory University from 2019-2021. As an Assistant Professor, Dr. Bonds Johnson spends most of her time working on her research projects. The first project is to understand how health care providers and staff assist African American families of persons living with dementia make health care decisions for the person living with dementia. The second project is focused on understanding from the perspectives of African American families their need in getting the right health care services for their parents living with dementia while considering individual, family, community, and societal factors. With data from both projects, Dr. Bonds Johnson will design and tests a health care decision-making program for African American adults daughters to navigate the health care system for a parent with dementia in hopes of improving their quality of life.
