Anika L. Hines, PhD, MPH is an Assistant Professor in Health Behavior and Policy at the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine. Her research seeks to: 1) explicate the complex and cumulative effects of stress in the lived experiences of racial/ethnic minorities as it pertains to cardiovascular disease development; and 2) design and implement innovative, evidence-based interventions and policies to address these multi-level stressors and reduce racial disparities using an interdisciplinary, socioecological approach. Her current research portfolio includes the design and implementation of novel strategies to mitigate cardiovascular risk among young Black women (NHLBI K01HL152011), including those who aim to conceive (AHA CDA 940494) as well as community-engaged interventions leveraging the arts to prevent and control high blood pressure (ABC Innovation Award). She also serves as a co-investigator on multi-level and community trials targeting hypertension and other cardiometabolic risk factors within the context of the built and social environments.
