Roberta Maierhofer, a leading expert of Age/ing Studies, is Professor of American Studies and Director of the Center for Inter-American Studies of the University of Graz. She is co-editor of the book series “Aging Studies” (transcript) and editor of the “Off Campus: Seggau School of Thought” series. For over three decades, she has been serving the gerontological community as a present and past member of editorial boards and committees, such as the Journal of Aging, Humanities, the Arts, Aging and Ageism Caucus of the National Women’s Studies Association, the Modern Language Association, Humanities and Arts Committee of GSA, as well as dissertation boards and advisory councils. As a founding member of the European Network in Aging Studies (ENAS), she also supported the establishment of the North American Network in Aging Studies (NANAS). As chair of the ENAS InheritAGE working group, she emphasizes an interdisciplinary approach to gerontological studies. Her research focuses on (Inter)-American Literature and Cultural Studies, Gender Studies, Transatlantic Cooperation in Education, Digitalisation, Diversity, and Interculturality as well as Age/Aging Studies. In her publication, “Salty Old Women: Gender and Aging in American Culture”, she developed a theoretical approach to gender and aging (Anocriticism), which has been taken up in various disciplines, such as sociology and Media Studies. She has also been instrumental in developing research projects on a national and international level. In the EU project “Gendering Age: Representations of Masculinities and Ageing in European Literatures and Cinemas” (MascAge), together with Barbara Ratzenböck, and Florian Pirker she has been conducting a qualitative study on the life experiences of older men in Austria. Within the multi-methodological research project Ageing+ Communication+Technologies (ACT), Barbara Ratzenböck (data set coordinator) and Maierhofer (ACT sponsor) were leading the Austrian quantitative survey of the ACT cross-national longitudinal study “Older Audiences in the Digital Media Environment.”
