My long-term goal as a nurse academician is to improve the lives of older adults through research, teaching and service. Prior to earning my PhD in Nursing, I worked as a Certified Clinical Research Associate in the University of Utah School of Medicine, Department of Surgery, where I led the Burn Unit’s clinical research studies. This work informed my dissertation research, an ecological study of geographic and socioeconomic factors associated with burn risk. As a John A. Hartford Clare M. Fagin Post-Doctoral fellow, I built on my dissertation research to describe injury risks in rural older adults and how social support and access to health care impacted their ability to return to their home communities after an injury. I am the director of the Utah Geriatric Education Consortium, a HRSA funded Geriatric Workforce Enhancement Program (GWEP). During the first 4-years of funding, the UGEC partnered with nursing home organizations and health professions programs at the University of Utah to educate students, clinicians, staff, residents and families about caring for older adults in nursing homes. In 2019, I led the UGEC grant-writing team to successfully apply for 5-additional years of GWEP funding to continue our educational programs for students, long-term care staff and providers, and to expand our reach to caregivers across other long-term services and supports (LTSS) settings including University of Utah Health geriatric and ambulatory care clinics. I am a GSA and American Academy of Nursing (FAAN) fellow.
