Dr. Pickering is an Associate Professor at the Center for Neurodegeneration and Experimental Therapeutics, a part of the Department of Neurology at The University of Alabama at Birmingham. His research group is interested in the role of proteostasis in aging and neurodegenerative diseases. They have reported neuronal specific augmentation of proteasome function to extend lifespan and protect against age related cognitive declines. They have also found proteasome augmentation through genetic and pharmacologic interventions to protect against Alzheimer’s disease like pathology in fly and mouse models of AD.
