Associate Professor
The University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston
Houston, Texas, United States
I am an Associate Professor in the Department of Management, Policy, and Community Health at the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston, Texas (UT Health). I am also an Adjunct Associate Professor in the School of Population and Public Health at The University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB). I received my Medical degree in Bogota, Colombia in 2004, followed by my Ph.D. in Health Services Research from UTMB in 2012. I then returned to clinical practice and completed a Residency in Internal Medicine and a Fellowship in Geriatrics, in 2016. I returned to UTMB in 2017 and have developed a career as a Clinician-Scientist. My goal as a Clinician-Scientist is to produce evidence that informs the development of interventions that improve the well-being of older adults and their caregivers, especially those from underrepresented groups. I had a Diversity Supplement from NIH to investigate factors that affect well-being and healthcare use among couples where one of the members has dementia and determine if there are differences between Hispanics and Non-Hispanics. I am the Project Manager of the D-Care study at UTMB. The D-Care study is a pragmatic clinical trial comparing models of care for persons living with dementia and their caregivers. I also have a pilot project from the NIA IMPACT Collaboratory to adapt and test the Patient Priorities Care approach to Hispanics with multiple chronic conditions and dementia.
