Saunders is an Associate Professor in the Neurology Department, with a doctorate in sociolinguistics from Georgetown University. Her research focuses on language, empathy, doctor/patient communication, and aging. She has spent the last 25 years teaching and conducting research. Her research program includes funding from the National Institute of Mental Health, the National Institute on Aging, and the Alzheimer’s Association looking at communication patterns between doctors and patients suffering from dementia. She has served in many leadership roles related to the educational curriculum at Georgetown University School of Medicine. She is Director of the Geriatrics Clerkship for third-year medical students and is the founding director of the Aging & Health masters degree program in the Georgetown University Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.
