Maira Castaneda-Avila, Ph.D., is a post-doctoral research associate in the Department of Population and Quantitative Health Sciences at the University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School. She is currently funded by the T32 Prevention and Control of Cancer Training for Change in Individuals and Systems Post-doctoral fellowship. She earned a B.S. in Cellular and Molecular Biology from Universidad Ana G Mendez in Cupey, Puerto Rico. After completing her bachelor’s degree, she was part of the Introduction for Cancer Research Career program of the National Cancer Institute. Later, Maira earned a MS in epidemiology at the University of Puerto Rico, Medical Sciences Campus. She then completed her PhD in the Clinical and Population Health Research Program at the University Massachusetts Chan Medical School, Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. Maira's research interests include use of data to design and inform interventions for cancer screening and prevention within health care settings among underserved populations, with a specific focus on Latino/Hispanic and elderly populations. She is particularly interested in conducting research to reduce the disparities that Hispanic older adults may experience in their care related to aging, cancer, and multiple chronic conditions. She has also contributed to several cancer epidemiology studies focused on the prevention and control of Human Papilloma Virus. Her PhD dissertation was focused on the identification and evaluation of characteristics associated with the diagnosis of a multiple myeloma precursor, monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS), and the assessment of the factors contributing to healthcare utilization in this population.
